I guess the closest I come to this sort of obsessive life long creation would be my 235 journals. I have been journaling for 36 years now! I wish there was a library that would take them all in when I die. The thought of them going into the trash is such a bummer. I found a guy online named Ray Zagar who has a Diary Library, but it turns out he's in a nursing home not far from here. Not sure if his library is still open or not. I tracked down another avid journaler online, got his address at the nursing home and sent him a card. Who knows what may come of it. I'll keep you posted!
There is this permanent art display in old town Eureka that I have seen before but never took much notice of. They housed it behind glass to preserve it, and all of the paint was faded by the sun. The other day I went to an herb shop across the street from the display, and decided to check it out one more time. It was created by Italian immigrant Romano Gabriel. He moved to Eureka after World War I, and thought that the cool, foggy climate and salty air made growing a flower garden nearly impossible. So Romano decided to create his own flower garden out of old wooden crates from the fruit market. He mainly created large, fanciful flowers, people and animals. His whole yard was covered in them, and they obscured his shed completely. He liked to sit out there in the shed and watch all the people who would come by to admire his homemade garden. Sometimes he would secretly animate the figures and delighted in the awe from onlookers. He worked on his garden for 30 years! Don't you wish you had a wacky artist like this guy living in your neighborhood? And he was doing this back in the 40's-70's, when society was a lot more judgmental about eccentric artist types. I wish I would have known him. I love it when people take on huge projects like this. I love the idea of transforming a yard with art, but I wouldn't want a bunch of visitors coming by to look. I'm too much of a hermit/curmudgeon for that!
